THE NORTHERN KING CHARLES SPANIEL CLUB
Established 1907

Tribute to Gillian Smith
It is with great sadness, disbelief, and a huge measure of shock the club is now coming to terms with the announcement of our President and former secretary Gill Smith passing. We take some comfort to learn Steve, her dedicated husband and love of her life was with her. Gill and Steve were a devoted couple who married in 1981 they embraced life together and derived great enjoyment spending time with both their dog show “family” and her their granddaughters who spent a lot of time with them and the dogs.
In 2005 Gill & Steve bred their first Champion Justacharma Gift of Magic, a tricolour bitch, she was sired by Tucherish Valentino is Justacharma and out of Justacharma Remember Magic. Pauline Eddleston showed her and made her up. Many more beautiful Justacharma Champions have followed over the last twenty years.
Gill became the Secretary of the Northern King Charles Spaniel Club in 1995 and became an outstanding Secretary whose dedication and leadership helped the club move forward with stability. Under her guidance a fixed venue was established at Grenoside, ensuring consistency for all shows and providing a reliable home for exhibitors and attendees. Always approachable and professional, Gill fostered strong relationships, including her values and interactions with the King Charles Spaniel Association.
Her commitment extended beyond the club responsibilities and Gill played a significant role in the welfare of the breed through her service with the “2 Breed Club Rescue “programs for King Charles Spaniels. Gill’s passion and tireless efforts have left an enduring legacy and influence on the “Charlie” community. She will always be deeply appreciated and fondly remembered by all lucky enough to call her a friend for her devotion and loyalty to the breed.
Gill was always welcoming to both long term and new members. Her positivity and lust for life was unquestionable alongside her love and dedication to our wonderful breed. Gill’s friendship, kindness and long chats whether at shows or in messages will be missed forever. Shows will never be the same again without seeing Gill at the ringside.
She worked her way up to judging Championship shows and in fact judged at W.E.L.K.S. earlier this year.
As well as judging she was always keen to help as a mentor and with a final assessment which she did at U.K.T.D. in March this year.
As we begin to navigate the future without Gill as our President the committee and officers plan to acknowledge her contribution and dedication to the club in due course for now the sadness is too overwhelming.
